 Jökulsárgljúfur National Park
 
Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is located in Vatnajökull National Park. The canyon is about 25 km long (9 mi²) and in many places more than 100 meters deep (328 ft). There are several interesting hiking routes inside the National Park, both short and long.

Places of interest:
  • Ásbyrgi –  Horseshoe shaped depression with towering steep cliffs around 100 meters high (328 ft).  According to Norse Mythology  Ásbyrgi was created by Sleipnir, the eight legged horse, belonging to the chief pagan god, Óðinn. The legend says that once flying in the air Sleipnir made a hoofprint in the landscape when he put down one of its legs.  
  • Hljóðaklettar –beautiful forms and patterns of basalt columns.
  • Hólmatungur  – popular trail with diverse scenery and lush vegetation.
  • Dettifoss – Europe‘s most powerfull waterfall with the average water flow of 200 m³. The falls are  45 meters high (148 ft) and 100 meters wide (328 f).
