AH37  In the Footsteps of Leifur Eiríksson 1 Jun 2012 -
31 Aug 2012

Highlights:
  • Eiríksstaðir, home of Erik the Red
  • Deildartunguhver hotspring
  • Leifssafn Museum
  • Local dairy Erpsstaðir

Tour Description:

Viking heritage is intrinsically woven into the fabric of Icelandic culture. On this voyage you travel to Eiríksstaðir, the original home of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leif Eiriksson, two of the most celebrated Vikings in the world. In a living history museum, replica of their home, discover their saga and taste traditional Viking fare. Our travel route provides spectacular natural landscapes and rustic pleasures along the way.

The journey begins with a visit to Deildartunguhver which is Europe's most powerful hot spring. Then we travel through the fertile farmlands of Búðardalur to reach Leifssafn Museum and visit the Vineland Exhibit of Leif Eiriksson with scientifically verified tools and artifacts from the Viking Age.

A short drive brings us to the highlight of our day, Eiríksstaðir, the original home of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leif Eiriksson. We meet a modern day Viking and get a hands-on experience with swords, helmets and tools which are historic reconstructions based on Viking design.

Afterwards we head to the local dairy Erpsstaðir to get introduced to Icelandic farming life and taste freshly made organic dairy products like traditional skyr, cheese and ice cream.

Without question the best tour we took while in Iceland. Elias, the guide, was like an old friend welcoming you to go on a trip down memory lane and shared a wealth of information regarding history, culture, folklore, tradition, diet, shopping and a variety of other topics. While the name of the tour may seem a misnomer given the relatively small amount of time spent at Leifurs location, the host at the site was excellent, both informative and engaging. Tour guide and tour get a 10/10.

Friendly and well informed driver, but disappointing to find he needed to call ahead to check whether the actual highlights of the tour were OPEN! The museum - we were able to coincide with the short lunch hour of a local teacher so had a very rushed and incomplete visit. It was the same at the home of Erik the Red - an abridged version of what I imagine is far more detailed in the season - a local farmer rushed over (and rushed away) to give a brief history of the site. This resulted in a long unnecessary stop at a cafe at the end of the trip. Farm visit was excellent. In view of the high price I think a reduced rate/refund at the end of the season would be in order!   - Iceland Excursions: Thank you for your comments and review. During the last few trips to the area we had to make sure that the places to be visited had staff to receive our groups. This seasonal tour goes to areas that are normally closed by August 30th but our regular day tours were operated until end of September.

Fantastic tour that was a great potpourri of things: culture (the troll garden at Fossatun), geology (hot springs and a hike up a dormant volcano to see a crater), history (the birthplace of Leifur Eiriksson and the town of Borgarnes), and food (visit to a dairy farm to taste ice cream and skyr!). Our guide was great and full of a ton of interesting information. Plus, she also introduced our group to some Icelandic music that included local musicians other than Bjork or Sigur Ros. And you couldn't beat the breathtaking scenery that we drove through on our way to all these locations. I'd recommend this tour to anyone who wants a bunch of 'mini tours' while on 1 big tour. The varied locations and topics are more than enough to keep anyone's attention span! Big thanks to our great guide!
