AH12  The Golden Circle Classic All year round

Highlights:
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • Geysir hot spring area
  • Skálholt church
  • Geothermal Powerplant, Hellisheidavirkjun

Tour Description:

This popular excursion introduces you to some of the best known historical sites and natural phenomena in Iceland.

We start by visiting Nesjavellir, a high temperature geothermal area in the scenic landscape of Lake Þingvallavatn. From there we go to the Þingvellir National Park, where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was founded in the year 930 AD. Þingvellir is geologically remarkable and the tectonic plate boundaries form a breathtaking scenery.

Panoramas Iceland
We continue to the beautiful waterfall Gullfoss, where we can walk so close to the edge that we might feel the mist of the glacial water on our faces.

Our lunchbreak is usually at the Gullfoss Cafe. Sometimes we also stop for lunch at the Information Center at the geothermal area around Geysir.

From there we journey towards the geothermal area around the incredible spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur. We proceed to Skálholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops. A short stop at the Geothermal Powerplant, Hellisheidavirkjun, before returning to Reykjavik.

Due to weather and road conditions we cannot guarantee visits to Nesjavellir in the winter season.

We did the Golden Circle tour in glorious sunshine (1st May) which was of great benefit for both views and photography. Scenery was stunning, and the Rift Valley, Geysir and the Gulfoss Falls all lived up to expectations. Our coach was very modern and extremely comfortable, and hotel pick-ups and drop-offs worked exactly as indicated in the pre tour literature. We also saw the Law Rock, visited Skalholt church (not a lot to see here) and the Kerid volcanic crater. Before booking we were told we might visit the Faxi Falls, but this did not happen, and whilst the Power Station visit was very interesting we were asked to pay 500 ISK each to visit their exhibition - the website had clearly stated "No hidden extras". Having said that, I highly recommend this particular tour and put it in one of those "never to be forgotten" filing places. C Jones, Chester, England. --- Iceland Excursions: --- Thank you for your very nice comments and review. The last stop at the power plant at Hellisheidi is only to give passengers a chance to view the facilities and use bathrooms and coffee shop on the premises. The paid entry to the exhibition is optional and passengers are not obliged to take the tour.

First time ti Iceland and this was a great tour. It was a good way to get an overall introduction to Iceland. The guide was very knowledgable. We stopped at several other smaller sites that where not on the itinerary as we where making good time...so we appreciated the "extra' things we saw.

It was a fantastic tour. The guide told us many interesting things about Iceland and the places we visited. And it was delightful for me as a tourist to visit all the places you had picked out for us. A wonderful experience!
