AH32  Landmannalaugar by bus 18 Jun 2012 -
10 Sep 2012

Highlights:
  • Hjálparfoss waterfall
  • Landmannalaugar
  • Natural warm pool
  • Beautiful Volcanic Countryside

Tour Description:

We depart from Reykjavík and head to the interior geothermal area Landmannalaugar, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Central Highlands”. We journey through the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland and proceed into the highlands through Þjórsárdalur valley and visit Hjálparfoss waterfall.

Panoramas IcelandLandmannalaugar’s colorful mountains are formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area and the picturesque natural landscape in this raw climate is simply breathtaking. While there, we can enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined, or take a leisurely hike in the surrounding rhyolite mountain paths. The tour continues back to the west and past Iceland’s most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which was believed to be the gateway to hell during the Middle Ages. The volcano has had frequent eruptions in the past years and has left thick layers of ash and pumice over the landscape. We return to Reykjavík over Hellisheiði mountain heath.

We recommend you bring your bathing suit and a towel.

You do tend to spend a lot of time on the bus but it does take a while to get to all the scenic spots! So most of the best scenery was scene on the bus. But Landmannalauger is beautiful and a dip in hot spring is a must.

The tour was a bit lenghty, but well worth the time spent riding in the bus. We enjoyed the waterfalls, volcano craters, the Landmannalaugar hot spring, and all the other sights we saw. My only complaint was the lunch stop. The food was mundane and the prices way to high even for Iceland. We would have much prefered to have gotten a sandwich at the first stop we made if we had known. With that said, we do recommend this trip to everyone.

We had booked four vacations through Gray Line for our visit to Iceland and all four were well run and enjoyable. Of the four, this was probably our least favourite although there was nothing actually wrong with the tour - it delivered on all it promised. I think we spent more time on the bus than actually exploring the sites. The highlight is definitely the dip in the springs. The day we went it was cold and rainy - the change area is quite a hike to the springs and humorous watching the tourists in bathing suits and parkas make their way along the boardwalk. The springs are very shallow and you need to practically lie down in the water to stay warm. Still, a great memory and lots of fun.
