AH117  Blue Ice All year round

Highlights:
  • Explore Sólheimajökull glacier
  • Skógafoss waterfall

Tour Description:

Here is your chance to visit a glacier and not just any glacier, this trip will take you to the frozen glacial tongue that is Sólheimajökull. It is a magnificent phenomenon, a rugged, raw and ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. We will explore the crevasse riddled outlet glacier with its amazing ice formations, sink holes and jagged ridges accompanied by an experienced glacier guide. Along the way we will find an ice wall on the glacier and try our hand at ice climbing. We will provide you with all the tools you need: ice axes, crampons and safety lines, making sure you are very safe as you brave the heights. As we drive back to Reykjavik we will stop at the beautiful Skógafoss waterfall.

On this trip you get to see and do what most of the population will only dream about and very few ever try. Why not be adventurous and explore the amazing crawling glacier?

We recommend hiking boots, wind and waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves. Hiking boots can be rented from the tour operator.

What to wear on your hike and to bring with you:
Hiking boots: We recommend good hiking boots with ankle support.
First layer: It is very important to wear wool underwear or other thermal underwear closest to your body. That is a key factor in preserving your body temperature during the hike.
Second layer: We recommend a good fleece sweater or other warm sweater as a second layer, to wear over your first layer and under your waterproof jacket.
Hiking pants: We recommend light synthetic hiking pants, which can be worn over a first layer. Please don't wear jeans
WP (waterproof) Jacket & pants: Breathable waterproof jacket and pants are necessary. Even though it's not raining or snowing when you leave town, it doesn't mean it won't rain or snow during the day.
Beanie: Bare head is BAD. Protect your brain, it will provide you with amazing memories from your hike. Your ears might also appreciate not freezing off on a cold day.
Gloves: Protect your hands. You want them to stay warm to be able to feel your camera and take pictures.
Water and snacks: Bring a bottle of water to drink. It is the fuel for your body and helps you feel good during your hike. We also recommend you bring some snacks for the day. Nuts, chocolate and power bars will come in handy.
Camera: Will help your brain to remember your amazing day out in Iceland.

Gear rental: The tour operator rents hiking boots and rainwear for a moderate fee to be paid directly to the tour operator. Please advice in advance if you would  like to rent boots or rainwear.

I loved every second of this tour. Our guides, Kristjan and Dori were super friendly and knowledgeable. The excursion itself was amazing. It was physically challenging, but not so much that the average person wouldn't enjoy it. Standing at the top of the glacier is a feeling I will not forget. I really loved that Dori was so excited to tell us all about the landscape and how the glaciers came to be. It was part history/geography lesson and part climbing. I would recommend this tour to everyone.

This tour is actually run by Arctic Adventures not Gray Line but the it was a good tour (I have had a look since returning and the price isn’t that much different on Arctic Adventures website). One of the main reasons I brought our tours through Gray Line is because they would give you a refund with 24 hours notice, which others did not. Going on a self organised holiday from Britain can be ruined if a few centimetres of snow fall. The tour guides were really confident ad helped everyone get into their equipment. Everything was fully explained to us and they put me at ease. I am, unfortunately a bit terrified of heights but I didn’t find the walk too bad at all, although there were certain times I had to avert my eyes from the drop. The only aspect that stumped me was actual climb with the ropes. I found it easy enough to get half way but then I made the mistake of looking down and as everyone who fears heights knows that results in a loss of muscle power and therefore the inevitable (safe) quick descent. The scenery is breathtaking and it felt amazing standing on top of such a beautiful part of the world. The tour guides are very good and tell you lots about Icelandic culture and traditions as well as facts about the glacier. One, which mildly bemused me was that there weren’t any glaciers in Iceland in the tenth century when parliament was established. A couple of tips for the tour:Follow the guides. They will reiterate this again and again but it is a dangerous place and you could get yourself hurt if you decided to go wandering.Wear layers. We were very lucky and the sun was blaring. I had a massive coat on and by the end I was sweltering in the 0 degree weather. If the sun went though I imagine it would have been cold.Have good boots. If you wear trainers you won’t be able to climb the glacier you will not be able to climb. The crampons won’t stay on flexible soles and you won’t stand a chance of getting up. If you are worried try and bend your soles if you can easily move it then take better shoes. If you are like me, and need to eat reasonable regularly, then take something for the bus on the way as we didn’t eat until gone two and we ate breakfast at 07.30. I was feeling a bit dizzy by the time I ate. Take water you will get thirsty. All in all it was great tour. --- Iceland Excursions: --- Thank you for your comments and review. The tour is operated in cooperation with Arctic Adventures and the fare is the same.  Glad you enjoyed the tour and thank you for your very good points for others that may read your review. There is a stop to buy refreshments about 1 hour into the tour and usually the guide would recommend passengers to buy something to bring along because the light meal offered at the end of the glacier hike may be a bit late for some.

Wev'e had two guides, both of them a professional and kind. walking on the glacier is a special experience. Unfortunately we did not enter any ice caves because all of them were covered with snow.

Excellent day trip. Scenic drive to glacier with plenty of time to hike. The ice climb was exciting and challenging. I enjoyed the stop at the waterfall but would have liked to climb the lookout. The guides were very pleasant and explained the equipment, skills and safety completely. Definitely important to have the right personal equipment, especially rigid hiking boots for the climb. We had sunny skies and it was an outstanding experience

The Blue Ice Tour was the highlight of our trip to Iceland. We had a blast trying out ice climbing for the first time, and we were very pleased with the knowledge of our tour guides. We definitely recommend the tour!
