Today the annual Icelandic Horse Festival kicks off, which will continue over the weekend with lectures about their history and behaviour. People also get a chance to ride a horse with the assistance of a seasoned jockey. Also a race ("running walk" competition, typical for Icelandic horses) will be held at the ice skating rink at Laugardalur Park.
The highlight will most certainly be the parade on Saturday where 150 horses and their jockeys will make their way through downtown Reykjavik, riding a big lap around the city pond, passing Hallgrímskirkja church and the Icelandic parliament on Austurvöllur square.
